On Celebrity Divorce and Twitter
Russell Brand ( @RustyRockets ) and Katy Perry ( @KatyPerry ) are to be divorced. As soon as the news broke there were ‘jokes’ doing the rounds on Twitter about the shortness of their marriage.
I have to say I find the whole thing really, truly heartbreaking.
Usually when celebrities divorce, I am divorced from it. I have no interest in the private lives of celebrities. But, having read both of Rusty’s autobiographies and ‘following’ both him and Katy Perry on Twitter, I feel somewhat closer to it in some way.
It’s easy to think that celebrities don’t take marriage seriously. I can say with some confidence that these two did. Reading the story of Russell falling in love with Katy was really touching. What is heartbreaking is that, through Twitter, you could see how little time they spent together because of their careers.
So not only did everyone think that they had the right to comment on their marriage, spread rumours about it and make jokes about it because they are celebrities. But their work contributed to the end, it would seem.
If you don’t like their work then avoid it. But if you do, don’t make rubbish jokes about it. Just let them have a bit of privacy for now. Russell will make his own jokes soon enough. And they will be fucking fantastic.
