RIP Society of the Day: Several film-goers in Liverpool demanded a refund after seeing award-winning throwback film The Artist because they were “unaware that The Artist was a silent film.”
Patrons of the Odeon Liverpool One reportedly asked for their money back upon realizing the film contains no spoken dialog and is presented on a smaller screen
The Artist, which just landed 12 BAFA nominations after picking up a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical), pays homage to the silent-era films of the 20s.
A Daily Telegraph source says Odeon Liverpool One ushers are now required to ask paying customers walking into The Artist if they are aware the film is silent.

I went to see this film the other day. In Liverpool One. And, upon entrance, I was told ‘It’s a silent film. Black and White’ to which my partner and I replied ‘Yeah, we know’ and they told us that people had demanded their money back. We found that funny, we passed on the story, but to be honest I never really took it that seriously. The impression I got was that it was one group of people. And they did the scouse thing of ‘trying it on’. I can picture it now. One brassy male standing at the counter in faux-outrage whilst, from about 6 feet behind him, the males in the group snigger and the women cringe. I imagine that they got their money back and, just so that others (probably this group’s friends having been regaled with the hilarious story of how ‘Deano and them got to see that silent film for free’) didn’t try it on too. So one gang of bellends. Well bellend and company. And a pretty standard response from the cinema. Not RIP society probably. But I can’t see more info coming out about it.
